Kidney Cancer

Kidney cancer is a type of cancer that originates in the kidneys, and the most common form is renal cell carcinoma (RCC). However, there are several different types and subtypes of kidney cancers, each with distinct characteristics.

Back
Symptoms

Symptoms of kidney cancer may include blood in the urine, persistent back or side pain, and a lump or mass in the abdomen. Other common signs include fatigue, unexplained weight loss, and fever. In more advanced stages, swelling in the legs or ankles can occur due to kidney dysfunction.

Risk Factors

Risk factors for kidney cancer include smoking, which significantly increases the risk, as well as obesity and high blood pressure. A family history of kidney cancer and certain genetic conditions, like von Hippel-Lindau disease, also contribute to higher risk. Gender (men are more likely to develop kidney cancer) and age (most cases occur in people over 60) are additional factors.

Subtypes of

Kidney Cancer

Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC)
This is some text inside of a div block.

Renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of kidney cancer, accounting for about 85% of all cases. It originates in the cells lining the small tubes in the kidneys. RCC is often diagnosed at later stages.

Subtypes:

  • Clear Cell RCC
  • Papillary RCC
  • Chromophobe RCC
  • Collecting Duct Carcinoma
  • Renal Medullary Carcinoma
  • Unclassified RCC
Urothelial Carcinoma (Transitional Cell Carcinoma)
This is some text inside of a div block.

Urothelial carcinoma is a rare form of kidney cancer that arises in the urothelial cells lining the renal pelvis (where urine collects before entering the ureter). It is more commonly associated with the bladder but can also affect the kidneys.

Wilms Tumor (Nephroblastoma)
This is some text inside of a div block.

Wilms tumor is a type of kidney cancer that primarily affects children, typically between the ages of 3 and 4. It is one of the most common cancers in children. Wilms tumor originates in the kidney cells that were developing abnormally during fetal growth.

Subtypes:

  • Classic Wilms Tumor
  • Anaplastic Wilms Tumor
  • Favorable Histology
  • Unfavorable Histology
Renal Sarcoma
This is some text inside of a div block.

Renal sarcoma is a rare form of kidney cancer that originates in the connective tissue of the kidney. Sarcomas of the kidney are much less common than RCC and tend to have a worse prognosis due to their aggressive nature.

Subtypes:

  • Leiomyosarcoma
  • Angiosarcoma
